Mayor McClendon Youth Empowerment Initiative partnered by: Southland Casino and Racing

Youth in West Memphis can now take advantage of summer job opportunities. The Mayor McClendon Youth Empowerment Initiative partnered by: Southland Casino and Racing is a program designed to provide West Memphis’s youth with summer employment and educational skills that will help them become a more productive ambassador for the City of West Memphis. The program is more than just a summer job, it will serve as a long-term tool to support our young people growth as future leaders of West Memphis.
This 6-week program beginning Monday, July 8th will be an employment and educational campaign for West Memphis youth working Monday thru Thursday, 10AM to 3:30PM at perspective city departments, small businesses and non-profit organizations. The youth ambassadors will all meet on Friday in a classroom setting, where they will hear lectures, participate in conflict resolution, communication, problem solving, civil responsibility, safety and financial literacy classes and more. They will also be broken down into groups to work together to develop mock business plans as well as work to develop future business for the city. The groups will have an opportunity to present plans at the end of the program to the city council.
The youth ambassadors are expected to be on time, dressed accordingly, respectful and follow all instructions, and can be terminated for not following directions. Youth must be 16 thru 18 years of age, 9th to 12th grade and provide proof of residency in West Memphis. Each qualified applicant will go through an interview process, we understand that we will be receiving more applications than we positions available for available, that’s why we will are working with other West Memphis small businesses and state agencies to help assist us in this process.
